Fool's Gold Boat
A unique and charming boat conceived as part of a large flotilla first exhibited in the Mostyn gallery, Llandudno.
Marged cast this vessel from a material she developed especially for this purpose, and then covered the form with gold leaf. The gold symbolizes the richness of cargo as it begins its journey – an idea of particular resonance for couples embarking on married life together.
Iron pyrites (more commonly known as ‘Fools Gold’) is a material found in slate; this particular piece of rock was found by Marged high above Blaenau Ffestiniog. The Croesor and Rhyd valleys where Marged lives are rich in natural resources, which were once exported to all corners of the globe. Drawing on this rich industrial heritage, Marged is fascinated by the materials of lead, copper and slate as well as the vessels used to transport them by river and by sea. As with most of Marged’s work, the wild boats are connected intrinsically to this specific place, but the associated ideas and themes resonate with cultures around the world.
Length: 15cm approx.
This little boat is a unique fine art piece and is not intended to be functional.
