Linocut prints from the Conwy Valley
Sophie Schärer works from her studio in the grounds of the historic Plas Tirion, near Llanrwst. The surrounding landscape of ancient lanes, woodland, pasture, lakes, mountains and coastline is steeped in tradition and folklore, providing Sophie with a constant source of inspiration.
Sophie creates linocut illustrations of the nature and landscape around her; especially the native plants, wildflowers and birdlife she encounters. She draws to capture brief observed moments – the changing of light or casting of shadows, or perhaps the busyness of a tiny bee. Each design is carved from a single block, and then printed by hand using an antique press.
